Travel Insurance Plans for Your Trip to Europe

Travel smarter in Europe with a Travel Guard travel insurance plan.

Traveling to Europe offers endless opportunities—from iconic cities and historic sites to stunning coastlines and alpine escapes. A Travel Guard® travel insurance plan can help you enjoy the journey with more confidence by providing coverage for certain unexpected events along the way.

Why you need a travel insurance plan for Europe

Europe travel insurance plans are designed to help give you extra peace of mind while you explore, so you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Whether you’re skiing, hiking, relaxing on the beach or discovering historic cities, Travel Guard can provide coverage across a wide range of covered activities and destinations.

No one likes to imagine getting sick or injured while traveling but preparing for the unexpected can make all the difference. Medical care in Europe can be costly for U.S. travelers, and an illness or accident could leave you facing high out-of-pocket expenses. A Travel Guard travel insurance plan can help reimburse certain covered emergency medical costs, so you can get back to making the most of your journey.

Our plans can also help with other common travel disruptions, such as trip cancellations, delays or lost baggage. And if you’re applying for a Schengen visa, proof of travel insurance is required - Travel Guard plans can help meet those requirements.

Planning to visit several countries in one trip? With Travel Guard, you’ll have support every step of the way.

Europe Travel Insurance Plans for Schengen Visas

If you’re a U.S. citizen planning a short trip to Europe (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) you generally won’t need a Schengen visa. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your return date, and you’re good to go.

However, if you’re traveling to Europe for longer than 90 days or traveling for work, study, or residence, you’ll need to apply for a Schengen visa. As part of the application, travelers are required to show proof of a travel insurance plan that provides approximately $50,000 in emergency medical expense coverage, including repatriation.

Many Travel Guard plans are designed to meet these requirements and may also include trip interruption coverage, baggage coverage, and 24/7 emergency travel assistance services.

“I insured my trip on a river cruise with Travel Guard. Unfortunately, two weeks before I was due to travel I became ill and my physician said I could not complete my travel plans.

Filing a claim was painless and representatives were helpful and supportive throughout the entire process. I received my reimbursement quickly, the peace of mind my Travel Guard policy afforded me was immeasurable, and I’m very grateful to have chosen them as my provider. ”

How much does a travel insurance plan for Europe cost?

The price of a travel insurance plan for your trip to Europe varies based on a few key factors, including the length of your trip, your age, the number of travelers in your group, and the level of coverage you choose.

A longer vacation with multiple travelers may cost more than a short getaway and choosing a plan with higher benefit limits will also affect the price.

While the cost of coverage is just a small percentage of your overall travel budget, it can help protect your much larger travel investment. From prepaid flights and hotel stays to tour packages, your travel insurance plan can help you recover certain prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if your plans are disrupted.

With Travel Guard, you can compare different plans side by side to find the right balance of coverage and cost for your needs. That way, you’ll know you’re getting value from your travel insurance plan, as well as greater peace of mind for your trip.

FAQs about Europe travel insurance plans

number-2

Is a travel insurance plan mandatory for traveling in Europe?

If you’re applying for a Schengen visa because you’re traveling in Europe for longer than 90 days or are planning to live, study or work there, then yes, having a travel insurance plan is mandatory. For all other trips to Europe, no, it’s not a requirement, but it is highly recommended.

Many U.S. health insurance plans may not have international coverage. To make sure you don’t risk having to pay hefty emergency healthcare bills, having a travel insurance plan is essential. The U.S. Department of State recommends travel insurance that covers health, medical evacuation and trip cancellation, to help protect you against unexpected expenses.

number-2

Do worldwide travel insurance plans cover Europe?

Travel Guard travel insurance plans are designed to cover you when traveling outside the United States, including trips to Europe. Instead of offering one single “worldwide” plan, we provide a range of options that can be tailored to your individual trip details, like your destination, travel dates, and the level of coverage you want. That means if you’re planning a European vacation, you can select a plan that includes the coverages you may need, such as  medical expense coverage, trip cancellation or interruption, and 24/7 assistance services.

number-2

What is the best travel insurance plan for Europe?

The best travel insurance plan for Europe depends on your trip and personal needs. Travel Guard offers several plan options, from more economical choices with essential benefits to deluxe plans with higher coverage limits and extra assistance services. Factors like trip cost, activities planned, and whether you need Schengen visa–compliant coverage may influence which plan is right for you. Comparing plans side by side can help you find the best fit for your European journey.

number-2

Are there age limits on travel insurance plans for Europe?

Travel Guard plans are available for travelers of many ages, including older adults. While age can affect the price of coverage there is no single cut-off that applies to every plan. Some plans may include optional upgrades, such as a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver, which can be valuable for older travelers. The easiest way to check your options is to get a quote with your trip and traveler details.

Europe Travel Tips and Safety Information

number-2

Is Europe safe to visit?

Yes, most European destinations are considered safe for travelers. That said, petty theft like pickpocketing and common tourist scams may occur in busy areas or on public transportation. Staying aware of your surroundings and taking basic precautions, such as keeping valuables secure, can help you feel more confident on your trip.

If you’re concerned about safety in the country you plan to visit, the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory can keep you updated. Check there for any potential issues or threats that might prevent you from traveling.

number-2

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

U.S. citizens can visit most European countries in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. If you plan to stay longer, or if your visit is for work or study, you may need a Schengen visa. Beginning in 2025, U.S. travelers will also need to apply online for ETIAS travel authorization before visiting Schengen countries - this is not a visa, but a required entry step.

number-2

When is the best time to travel to Europe?

The best time depends on the experience you’re looking for. Spring and fall often bring mild weather and fewer crowds, making them popular choices for sightseeing. Summer is ideal for beaches and festivals, though it’s also the busiest season. Winter can be magical for holiday markets and ski trips in the Alps.
