Why you need a travel insurance plan for the Caribbean

Even in paradise, unexpected events can affect your travel plans.

Hurricanes, tropical storms, flight delays, lost or delayed luggage and medical emergencies on remote islands can be challenging and costly. Since many U.S. health insurance plans may not provide coverage outside the country, having a Travel Guard travel insurance plan can not only help reimburse certain covered emergency medical expenses but also provide valuable help in finding medical care.

Island hopping? With 24/7 emergency travel assistance from Travel Guard, you’ll have support every step of the way.

How much does a travel insurance plan for the Caribbean cost?

The price of a travel insurance plan for your trip to the Caribbean depends on a few factors. Including trip length, your age, the cost of your trip and the level of coverage you choose.

A longer vacation with higher trip costs may cost more than a short getaway. Choosing a plan with higher benefit limits will also affect the price.

Keep in mind that while a travel insurance plan for a trip to the Caribbean does add a little extra onto your budget, it’s worth it if the unexpected happens. Accidents, delays and lost luggage can ruin a trip, but knowing you have coverage for certain expenses can alleviate some stress and worry!

With Travel Guard, you can compare different plans side by side to find the right balance of coverage and cost for your needs. That way, you’ll know you’re getting value from your travel insurance plan, as well as greater peace of mind for your trip.

FAQs about Caribbean travel insurance plans

number-2

Is a travel insurance plan mandatory for traveling in the Caribbean?

Travel insurance is not required for most Caribbean destinations. However, some resorts or islands may request proof of coverage, so check requirements before traveling. A travel insurance plan is strongly recommended to help protect your trip investment.

Many U.S. health insurance plans may not have international coverage. To make sure you don’t risk having to pay unexpected emergency medical costs, purchasing a travel insurance plan is essential. The U.S. Department of State recommends travel insurance that covers health, medical evacuation and trip cancellation when traveling internationally to help protect you against unexpected expenses.

number-2

Do worldwide travel insurance plans cover the Caribbean?

Travel Guard travel insurance plans are designed to cover you when traveling outside the U.S., including trips to the Caribbean. Instead of offering one single “worldwide” plan, we provide a range of options that can be tailored to your individual trip details, like your destination, travel dates and the level of coverage you want. If you’re planning a Caribbean vacation, you can select a plan that includes the coverage you may need, such as emergency medical expense coverage, trip cancellation or interruption, as well as our 24/7 assistance services.

number-2

Do travel insurance plans cover hurricanes in the Caribbean?

Yes. In the event of a covered hurricane or other certain unforeseen severe weather, a travel insurance plan may provide certain coverage under Trip Cancellation and Interruption (as long as you purchased your policy before the storm was named). If your trip is cancelled for a covered reason, we may reimburse for the pre-paid and non-refundable trip costs up to the limit of coverage, subject to the terms of the insurance policy. Read our full article on “What you need to know about Hurricanes and Travel Insurance Coverage” for more information.

number-2

Are adventure activities like snorkeling or scuba diving covered by a travel insurance plan?

Travel Guard’s base plans typically cover lower-risk activities like snorkeling or most hiking. However, if you’re planning adventurous or extreme activities like scuba diving, hang gliding and mountain climbing for example, you’ll want to make sure and add Travel Guard’s Adventure Sports Bundle to your travel insurance plan. The Adventure Sports Bundle removes the exclusions on the policy related to adventurous and extreme activities.

number-2

What medical expense coverage do I need for the Caribbean?

Healthcare standards and access can vary across the Caribbean. Private medical care can be expensive and if you’re visiting more remote locales, the cost to transfer you somewhere with the appropriate level of care can be expensive as well. A comprehensive travel insurance plan with Travel Medical Expense coverage and Emergency Evacuation is essential for greater peace of mind.

Caribbean travel tips and safety information

number-2

Is the Caribbean safe to visit?

Yes, most countries in the Caribbean are currently at “Level 1: Exercise normal precautions” - meaning it’s generally safe to visit. Many Caribbean destinations welcome travelers year-round. Use normal travel precautions such as keeping valuables secure and staying aware of your surroundings.

If you’re concerned about safety in the country you plan to visit, the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory can keep you updated. Check there for any potential issues or threats that might prevent you from traveling. You can also consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for alerts while abroad.

number-2

Do you need a visa to travel to the Caribbean?

Most Caribbean destinations welcome U.S. citizens without a visa for short stays (often up to 30 - 90 days). However, each island has its own visa regulations and requirements. For example, some Caribbean islands are overseas territories. Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Martin and St. Barts are French territories, whereas the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Turks and Caicos are British territories – so visa requirements may differ. Islands like Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are U.S. territories, so you won’t need a visa or a passport if you’re a U.S. citizen.

Always check entry requirements for your specific island destination before you travel, as they can vary.

number-2

When is the best time to travel to the Caribbean?

The Caribbean is warm year-round. Peak season runs from December through April, with many people hoping to escape the cold weather in the U.S. during that time. Hurricane season (June–November) offers lower prices but comes with a higher chance of weather-related disruptions.
