How to Choose the Right Rental Car for Your Trip

When you’re driving in a new location it’s important to feel comfortable behind the wheel. Whether you plan to drive from the airport to your lodging or go on a road trip, you can find a vehicle that suits your needs and budget. To help you find the best vehicle for your trip, we’ve created a list of tips to help you decide.

Set a budget

The price of a rental car is determined by the type of vehicle you want, the length of your trip, the number of miles you plan to drive and other factors like add-ons that can increase the price. Start your search by setting a budget so you know how much you’re willing to spend on a rental car. Keep in mind the first price you see when making a reservation is likely the base price – make sure to leave room for additional fees like higher demand costs so you don’t go over budget.

Choose the right car

There are many reasons for renting a car, which is why rental companies offer many different options for vehicles. Even though you can’t choose the exact vehicle you’ll be renting, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by what’s available. Thankfully, you can narrow down the options by figuring out your needs.

Vehicle size

Make sure your rental vehicle has plenty of space to hold you and anyone who may ride with you throughout your trip. Take luggage space into account when booking your car rental to avoid winding up cramped. You can make sure you have enough space by having more seats than you do passengers. In other words, a family of five should book a vehicle with at least seven seats to ensure there’s room for your belongings.

Unfamiliar terrain

The driving conditions at your destination are likely going to be different than the roads you’re used to. When picking a vehicle type, research what other travelers say about your destination. For city driving and narrow roads, compact cars are a great choice. While off-roading would require a vehicle with four-wheel drive and plenty of ground clearance. Or, you might be going somewhere with icy conditions, which would make vehicles with all-wheel drive the best choice for your trip.

Eco-friendly options

If lowering your environmental footprint is a priority for your trip, you can look for an eco-friendly choice like an electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. If you’re unable to get an eco-friendly car, you can lower your environmental impact with good driving habits like avoiding idling and maintaining steady speeds to reduce fuel usage. If you choose an all-electric option, ensure you can charge your vehicle along your route.

Trip length

The length of your trip can help you decide on a vehicle. If you don’t plan on driving very much or will have limited parking available, then a compact car is an easy choice to make. But for longer trips and off-road adventures, you should choose a vehicle with four-wheel drive that can withstand long drives and different driving conditions you’re likely to encounter during your trip.

Manual vs automatic

Some countries prefer manual-transmission vehicles instead of automatic like the ones we’re accustomed to in the U.S. While automatic-vehicle options are still available, they will likely be marked at a higher price than a vehicle with a manual transmission.

Features you’d like

Aside from vehicle size and storage space, make sure your rental car has key features, like air conditioning, which will keep you comfortable during your trip. If you plan to travel with kids, ask about renting a car seat so you don’t have to lug one around with you.

Depending on what’s available, you can get a vehicle with safety features like:

  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane assistance
  • Backup camera
  • Adaptive headlights
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Automatic emergency brakes
  • Collision warning

While booking a vehicle with these safety features may come at a higher price, it’s worth the cost to help keep you safe on the road.

Compare prices for car rentals

You can use websites like Expedia, Kayak or Priceline to compare different rental car prices to find the best option for you. You can filter your search to show options in your price range to get an idea of what’s available for your trip. From there, you can decide where you want to book. Sometimes, you can find a better deal by going directly to the rental company’s website or by using a membership like Costco or AAA for discounts. Just remember, the cheapest option isn’t always the best choice.

Understand your rental agreement

Knowing what to expect out of your car rental agreement is crucial to avoid fees you may not be aware of. Some rental car companies are stricter than others when it comes to adjusting your reservation, choosing your vehicle, pick-up and drop-off times and milage limits. Remember to read reviews on the rental company through forums and blogs so you can know what to look out for.

Inspect the car before renting

Once you leave the rental company’s parking lot, you’re fully responsible for the issues and damages with the vehicle. Thoroughly check the inner and outer workings of the vehicle to ensure it’s safe to drive and all the necessary features work as intended. If you find anything, even something small that won’t prevent you from using the rental, report it so the rental company has it on file.

Exterior damage

Walk around the rental vehicle and take notes of existing damage like dents, scratches or chipped glass. Look for any bumper damage, check the tire pressure and make sure the headlights, signal lights and high beams are all working before you hit the road. It’s a good idea to take pictures of your rental car to document the vehicle’s condition on pick-up.

How to exchange

After inspecting the vehicle, you might feel it’s a bad fit for you. In this case, you can ask the rental company if you can swap the car. Vehicle exchanges are not guaranteed and will depend on factors like availability of other vehicles and store management. Take thorough notes during your vehicle inspection so you can be prepared to answer questions about why you’d like to swap. The rental company may do their own inspection before allowing or denying a new vehicle for you.

Interior damage

Get in the vehicle to check for bad smells or damage like rips or tears in the upholstery. Check that all seatbelts work, the air conditioning turns on and the radio works. You can ask to do a test drive before leaving to make sure you don’t spot any mechanical issues when behind the wheel. Finally, check the fluid levels for oil, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid and coolant so the rental company can refill anything that’s low.

Book in advance

Finding the right time to book your rental car will help you find a great vehicle for a decent price. You’ll have more vehicle options the farther in advance you book. But if you’re flexible with the type of car you rent you could wait to book a few weeks before your trip, you might find better deals verses booking months in advance. Finally, give yourself plenty of time to read different car rental policies so you don’t get surprised by hidden fees.
