Tips to Prevent Seasickness

Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a veteran seafarer, there's a good chance you'll experience seasickness at some point in your maritime adventures. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 25% of all medical center visits aboard cruise ships are due to seasickness. To help you get the most out of your upcoming cruise, be sure to keep these seasickness prevention tips in mind:

Avoid spending too much time below deck

Cruise passengers with cabins on the lower levels are often more susceptible to seasickness, as the vessel's motion is often magnified below deck. Spending time above deck in the fresh air can help reduce many of the symptoms of seasickness, including nausea, dizziness, headaches and more.

Drink plenty of water

Dehydration can amplify many of the symptoms related to seasickness, especially if you've been sipping cocktails in the hot tropical sun. The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking at least 8 cups of water per day, as this can help you stay hydrated and may ward off seasickness altogether.

Bring along motion sickness medication

In some cases, the best remedies for seasickness are over-the-counter medications like Dramamine® and Bonine®. These antihistamines are designed to reduce feelings of imbalance and can help alleviate nausea, vomiting and lightheadedness.

Purchase a sea band

For travelers who prefer a more holistic approach, purchasing a "sea band" may help relieve the symptoms of seasickness without having to take medication. Sea bands are worn around the wrist and exert pressure on the P6 acupuncture point, which has been shown to relieve nausea and vomiting.

Limit your screen time

When traveling on a large cruise ship, focusing your eyes on stationary objects often leads to seasickness, or makes the symptoms worse. One of the best ways to avoid feeling ill on the open ocean is to limit the amount of time you spend staring at your smartphone and using the horizon line as a point of reference when moving about the deck.

Purchase travel insurance

Located in the central Caribbean sits a small, 112 square mile island called Bonaire.1 The Island is made up of volcanic rock and coral reef. As the island has uplifted over years coral reefs have formed in the shallow waters surrounding the island making it a much sought after destination of scuba divers. Also unique to Bonaire are the salt pans on the south end of the island. The salt pans are an amazing pink color because of the high concentration of Halophilic bacteria that thrives is salty conditions.2

Expenses incurred from third-party vendors for services not part of a filed insurance plan are the responsibility of the traveler.
