Don't forget travel insurance!

How to handle last-minute flight changes

There's no denying that last-minute flight changes can be stressful, but there's good news! The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that a little more than 77% of domestic flights were on time as of July 2019, so the odds are in your favor for smooth travels. If you do happen to experience a delayed, diverted or canceled flight, don't let it ruin your trip! Remember these useful tips to turn your extended airport stay into a great experience:

Do more research on your destination

Most airports offer free Wi-Fi and plenty of outlets for phones and laptops. You may be anxious to get to your destination, but hunker down and do some more research about where you're going. Even if you already have an itinerary in mind, look up specific restaurants and activities that you want to indulge in on your trip.

Explore the city you're in

Some delays and cancelations may give you the opportunity to leave the airport - on a layover, this is like an added bonus trip. Most airports are centrally located, so it should be easy to find inexpensive transportation and take in some of the locale before it's time to leave again.

Grab a bite to eat

In the rush of traveling, food is often overlooked. Now that you have the time to spare, fuel up at one of the many restaurants and bars that airports offer. Some may even have entertainment to help the time go by faster. A pro-tip from SkyScanner is to ask for a lounge pass from the airline - they may be inclined to give you one if the delay is their fault. For the free food, drinks and Wi-Fi, it's always worth a shot to ask nicely for this exclusive perk.

Get some much-needed rest

Were you up at a ridiculously early hour for your flight? Have you been traveling nonstop for the past 12 hours? Either way, travel is exhausting and you're most likely missing your bed. Airports are getting better at offering comfortable seating, so take your neck pillow out, pull your eye mask down and put your earplugs in - it's time to rest up for the journey to come and try to defeat jet lag.

Catch up on your reading

If you don't already have a book, explore one of the many airport kiosks and you'll be sure to find something to your liking. Local newspapers and guide books can also be great reading material. And when your flight does come, you'll have something to occupy you in the air.
