Tips for a Smooth Spring Break

When you plan a trip over spring break, you look forward to making memories with your family or friends, not experiencing travel mishaps. Unfortunately, sometimes a spring break trip is one case of the sniffles away from the doctor's office, one unwelcomed storm away from a flight cancellation or one plane ride away from losing half of your luggage. That's why it's important to travel smart and think ahead while planning your trip.

Research before you go

No matter where you're going, travel is easier when you have a plan. If activities and travel routes are mapped out, this can help you avoid wasting precious vacation time shelling out additional costs, getting lost, or becoming stressed out.

Don’t forget medicine

Pack ibuprofen, anti-diarrheal and other important medications in your purse or carry-on in case someone in your family needs it. This can be a lifesaver on a flight or mid-road trip.

If you are road tripping it

Take turns behind the wheel and make sure someone sits up front with the driver. They can help keep an eye on traffic and assist with directions when needed.

Staying at a hotel

A lot of hotels have apps now that let you choose the exact room you want. Consider things like relation to elevators where there might be more noise and traffic. If there are amenities you want easy access to, like the pool, double check which floor that’s on before you book.

Keep a routine

The fun of traveling is new experiences, but that can be overwhelming for kids. Try to keep a few routine things on the schedule that they’re used to. Whether that’s a nap, quiet time, or just a mid-afternoon snack, the familiarity can help them rally for the rest of the day.

Take advantage of free activities

A quick online search (or even call to the local Chamber of Commerce) can provide a ton of ideas on free activities you can participate in. A lot of towns host free music events, kids’ activities, and festivals which can be a great opportunity to save money and explore the area.
