  • Visit some of the world's best islands

    2013-03-28

Islands offer some of the most unique travel opportunities in the world. Cut off from land, they often have a culture and mystique all their own, and it's easy to get swept up in the local atmosphere while you're there. There are countless islands that serve as great places for a vacation, but TripAdvisor recently released its list of best islands in the world, and they span the globe from the United States to Asia to Africa.

    Easter Island, Chile
Located off the eastern coast of South America, Easter Island is most famous for its iconic head statues, which were carved between 1100 and 1680. While the heads are certainly a must-see attraction, there is much more to do on this tourist hotspot. For starters, there are ample opportunities for adventure travel and hiking. According to The Huffington Post, there are trails to fit every hiker's ability, and each is replete with natural beauty. You should also make a point to go spelunking in one of the island's many breathtaking caves.

    Isla Mujeres, Mexico
This tropical paradise is situated off the southernmost tip of Mexico, but it is more than just a great place to lounge on the beach - though that is certainly part of its appeal. The waters surrounding Isla Mujeres are home to beautiful coral reefs and diverse wildlife, so scuba diving or snorkeling is a must. If you're lucky enough to go during the annual Whale Shark Festival, you'll get to swim with these gentle giants - the world's biggest fish.

    San Juan Island, Washington
Recently designated as a national monument, San Juan Island is a gem in the Pacific Northwest. It is especially popular among adventure travel enthusiasts because of zip lining. There are few better ways to get your adrenaline pumping than careening through the island's lush forests dozens of feet above the ground. You can also take advantage of your prime location to go on the search for some orcas. Specifically Lime Kiln State Park is a great place to catch a glimpse of these majestic marine animals, not to mention the park itself is one of the most beautiful places in the continental United States.
