What makes Henry Doorly No. 1?
The Henry Doorly Zoo dates back to the 1880s. It was first the Riverview Park, but was renamed and reorganized by the Omaha Zoological Society. Back then it contained only 120 animals, including two bison on loan from "Buffalo Bill" Cody, according to CNN. Now the zoo has thousands of animals from all across the world living on its 130 acres of indoor and outdoor exhibits. The zoo is also known for its highly educated staff that's constantly prepared to answer all of your questions.
Top-notch exhibits
Henry Doorly's website lists some of the zoo's most popular exhibits. The newest exhibit, Stingray Beach, allows visitors to touch, feed and interact with an array of stingrays as they glide through an 80-foot-long pool.
The Hubbard Gorilla Valley puts a twist on the average viewing experience, for here, visitors are on display while the gorillas roam free. The three-acre exhibit makes Omaha a leader in gorilla conservation. Current research partners include zoos in North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia, according to the Henry Doorly Zoo.
The Kingdom of the Night, the world's largest nocturnal exhibit, is home to some of the most exotic animals. As you explore the Kingdom, you will find yourself in the midst of a bat cave and the largest indoor swamp across the globe.
Events and Extras
Visitors are also drawn to the zoo's new Imax Theater, which offers a variety of exciting daily shows for visitors in both 2D and 3D.
Frequent family events such as the Zoo Run and the Family Fiesta put the Henry Doorly Zoo a level above the rest as well. Hoping to learn more about a certain species before your visit to the zoo?
