• Looking for a cultural vacation? Try these 5 cities

One of the best parts of exploring a city is immersing yourself in its culture and learning about its history. TripAdvisor and Conde Nast Traveler recently ranked the top cities for travelers searching for a trip overflowing with art and culture. According to the online travel sources, these are some of the best cities based on reviews from experienced travelers.

    5. Siena, Italy
According to Conde Nast Traveler, readers gave Siena, Italy, 93 points out of 100. The quaint historic city was an independent republic for nearly 400 years after the land was settled first by the Etruscans and then by the Romans. One of the main attractions is the city's central square, Piazza del Campo. It's popularity stems from the fact that it hasn't been changed since the 13th century. Similarly, the Palio di Siena is a horse race from the 17th century that takes place each year in the same fashion. However, the city's focal point is the Siena Cathedral which houses the artwork of Michelangelo, Donatello and Bernini.

    4. London, England
History buffs all around the world go crazy for London. According to TripAdvisor, the Tate and National Galleries and the British Museum are among the world's best museums. Theater lovers flock to the famous Shakespeare's Globe Theatre for must-see performances while Buckingham and Kensington Palaces as well as the Tower of London represent a glimpse into the city's historic past.

    3. Salzburg, Austria
Known as the home of the singing Von Trapp family from the Sound of Music, the breathtaking Alpine town holds tightly to pieces of the celebrated past. For example, according to Conde Nast Traveler, Mozart Week is still around, recognizing the town as the birthplace of Amadeus Mozart. The opera concert and honorary festival is a major tourist attraction each January, while every summer the Salzburg Festival brings some world-class theater and music to the city. The Altstadt is truly a walk through history, with streets from the medieval and Baroque periods lined with well-preserved buildings.

    2. New York, United States
Perhaps one of the most cultural cities for United States travel, New York City is topped off with art and history. Some of the historical highlights include the famous Statue of Liberty and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A walk around the city will also bring travelers straight into the heart of Central Park, the Empire State Building and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

    1. Santiago de Compostela, Spain
According to Conde Nast Traveler, Spain's ancient city is frequently traveled by many Catholics, making it a prime destination for Europe travel. As the capital of Galicia, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela keeps within it the body of Saint James the Great and the 12 apostles of Jesus, according to legend. However, the beautiful Romanesque architecture and the medieval town that envelopes the cathedral make it easy for travelers with other intentions for making the trip to have a one of a kind experience. The Galician Contemporary Art Centre is also a haven for art lovers, providing a rare modern perspective on the culture of the region.
