  • History, culture combine in Salzburg

    2013-04-15

Central Europe is home to some of the best travel destinations in the world, and that is especially true when it comes to Austria. There are a number of cities that stand out as Europe travel highlights, but perhaps none more so than Salzburg. While it may not be as large as the bigger cities of Vienna and Graz, it has plenty to offer, and there are a few destinations in particular that you should add to your itinerary.

    Old Town
As the name suggests, this section of the city is home to many of the most historic spots in Austria. There are many popular tourist destinations in Old Town, but you should make a point to stop by the Salzburg Cathedral. Built in 1600s, this stunning piece of architecture is one of the most recognizable buildings in the entire city. Perhaps most impressively, the cathedral is still in use today and the intricate artwork contained inside is almost as stunning as its Baroque design outside.

Of course, there's more to Old Town than its architecture. The district is also home to thriving local culture like on Getreidegasse - a bustling street full of vendors. Whether or not you purchase anything is irrelevant because simply strolling through this famous section of road is enough to leave a lasting impression.

    Breathtaking views
Salzburg's appeal does not rest solely within the city. There are also a number of areas where you can experience some of the natural beauty Austria is famous for, and Kapuzinerberg is a good place to start. Kapuzinerberg is the name given to a large hill that rises far above the city and offers spectacular view of Salzburg. Not only that, but the trip up will certainly be a highlight for hiking enthusiasts as the trek brings you more than 2,000 feet above the city below.

In addition to Kapuzinerberg, you may want to take the trip to Mönchsberg, which rises above Old Town. This brings you even higher above the ground than other regions of the city's outskirts, and not only that, but the hike to the top crosses paths with many fortresses and other structures that date as far back as 15th century, which will add a bit of history to your trip to Salzburg.
