• Family bonding opportunities abound in the U.S.

Family travel has been a staple of summer for decades, and the tradition has a more important role than simply offering a chance to get away from the stress of everyday life. Taking trips as a family also provides excellent bonding opportunities, and many travelers say they value those experiences over relaxing on the beach or spending time at an amusement park. According to USA Today, there are a few destinations in the U.S. that are particularly well suited for families looking to bond this summer.

    Santa Fe, N.M.
The southwest is often admired for its natural beauty, but there is also a rich sense of culture permeating through many of the region's biggest cities, including Santa Fe. The New Mexico capital is an especially appealing destination for parents looking to foster their children's love of creative pursuits. There are numerous art galleries and museums spread throughout Santa Fe, including one dedicated to Georgia O'Keeffe, who is one of the most famous artists to call New Mexico home. There are also many concert venues including the Lensic Theater, which is more than 80 years old.

"It's a great way to introduce kids to art and music," family travel columnist Lynn O'Rourke Hayes told USA Today.

    Telluride, Colo.
Colorado is home to some of the best scenery in the U.S. The Rocky Mountains dominate the skyline of nearly every city, whether you find yourself in Boulder or Denver. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in Telluride. Located in the westernmost corner of the state, the city is a favorite destination of avid skiers, but it also an ideal spot for summer family travel. There are seemingly countless hiking opportunities for families, and the San Juan Mountains are your best bet. The trails vary in difficulty, so everyone can enjoy the spectacular views these famous peaks offer.

    Oregon Coast
There are few places in the U.S. quite like the Pacific Northwest, and the stretch along the Oregon coast is particularly beautiful. There is a long list of highlights, but one of the must-see locations is undoubtedly Ecola State Park. This popular destination offers everything from hiking and biking to fishing and beach combing. Or, if you'd prefer to tote around a camera, it's one of the best places in the state for photography enthusiasts. Whatever you choose, it will be sure to offer a memorable experience for you and your family.
