If travelers have an iron stomach and love to try new foods while abroad, they can attend the Hokitika Wildfoods festival and add it to their Australia & New Zealand travel itinerary. This unusual celebration of culinary delights welcomes all adventurous guests to sample an array of interesting local dishes and food prepared by some talented resident chefs.
For two days in March, people from all over New Zealand and the world gather together to consume creepy crawlies and various critters offered by vendors, participate in eating contests and more. According to the festival's website, some of the foods offered this year will include snails, honey comb chunks, raw kava fish and chocolate covered grubs. For those who may be a little squeamish, there will also be plenty of other culinary delights to enjoy, such as fresh strawberries, sausage sandwiches and BBQ ribs.
Those interested in entertainment can also check out the local bands, drag queen shows and cooking demonstrations happening throughout the event.
Nearby Hokitika is the scenic city of Greymouth, which may also be worth seeing while on vacation in the region. According to Lonely Planet, travelers should not miss some of the stunning art galleries, such as the photography featured at the Stewart Nimmo Gallery or jade carvings at Left Bank.
