Welcome to the May edition of the TRAVEL GUARD UPDATE, a monthly review designed to provide you with up-to-date information on the latest travel trends. This month, we polled travel agents to learn more about trends in honeymooning. We’ll also share how Travel Guard not only saved a couple while honeymooning in Italy, but made their trip extra romantic and special.

Travel Guard invites your comments and suggestions on any areas you'd like to see covered in this regular update. For more information on our travel insurance programs, please visit www.TravelGuard.com.

    In this month's issue:

Welcome to Paradise: Choosing the right destination can be as difficult as saying yes to the dress, and specific resort features can sway a couple’s decision. In fact, 72% of agents polled confirmed that all-inclusive packages interest clients the most when it comes to booking honeymoons. Other attractive resort features are intimate settings with plenty of privacy (15%), with fewer agents noting as deciding factors, options such as adventure excursions (4%), resort proximity to local attractions (2%), luxury spa amenities (2%) and unique culinary offerings (>1%).

The Price of Love: Of the agents polled the majority (59%) shared that compared to last year, there’s been no increase in budgets when it comes to honeymoons. The remaining 41% found that newlyweds are willing to stretch their spending this year.

Where in the World: With months of planning and to-do lists for the “big day,” choosing a honeymoon destination should be a walk in the park! An overwhelming amount of agents (67%) reported that The Caribbean and Mexico are the most popular destination among newlyweds followed by Hawaii/South Pacific (19%), Europe (7%), Latin/South America (1%), Australia (>1%), and Asia (>1%).

“Out Of Office, On Honeymoon”: Honeymoons are a once-in-a-lifetime vacation and a time to relax after the wedding whirlwind. Agents polled shared that 64% of clients choose to travel for a full week, while 18% stay for ten days, 12% go away for five days and only 4% choose to honeymoon for more than 10 days.

You’re Invited: It’s a blessing to spend the day with family, friends and loved ones during a wedding, and 32% of agents reported that they’ve seen an increase in clients inviting guests to join them for the honeymoon.

Seasons for Love: Agents reported that honeymooning is in fact seasonal, and summer is the top choice with 47% of clients booking in the warmer months. Spring (26%) and fall (19%) are also choice seasons, while winter only sees about 8% of honeymoon bookings.

Saying “I Do”: According to agents polled, the majority of clients (66%) say “I Do” to their honeymoon plans six months in advance of traveling, while 22% plan closer to a year out. Far fewer book less than three months out (8%) or more than a year out (3%).

Not a Fool in Love: Of the agents polled, 72% reported that the majority of their clients purchase travel insurance in an effort to safeguard their dream honeymoon from any mishaps.

Weddings don’t always go off without a hitch and honeymoons are no different. Newlyweds need to be as prepared as they are for their big day when it comes to these once-in-a-lifetime trips.

Unexpected interruptions to this large investment such as illness and injury can unfortunately occur. While travel insurance can’t prevent incidents, it can possibly help ease financial loss and provide much needed support.

The travel insurance plans available through Travel Guard can include coverage such as lost or stolen luggage and personal items, reimbursement of non-refundable deposits, baggage delay as well as additional coverage that allows couples to cancel for a covered reason. Plans may also include emergency medical coverage, trip interruption coverage, 24/7 emergency travel and health assistance services and concierge services, which can be useful for both domestic and international travel.

Christopher and Christi were worldwide travelers, but recently they had become more than that – they had become husband and wife and were now excited to spend their honeymoon in Italy. Christopher, who is of Italian decent and had spent time in the country many times before, couldn’t wait to show his bride some of his favorite places.

Unfortunately, while the newlyweds arrived safely in Italy to start their honeymoon, their luggage did not. Thankfully, the Travel Guard plan they purchased provided means to replace what had been lost while they were waiting for the airline to find and drop off their lost baggage.

For this couple, having a travel insurance plan meant more than having coverage in case something went wrong – it meant that they had access to 24/7 assistance services to assist them if they needed something while on their trip. That’s why, while on their excursion, Christopher’s father, Bernie, called Travel Guard’s assistance center and asked that a very special gift be delivered to the couple’s hotel suite. While the couple was out enjoying their vacation, Travel Guard facilitated Bernie’s purchase by working with local Italian businesses to arrange for one of Italy’s finest wines and chocolate-covered strawberries to be delivered to their room.

“What better way to start your honeymoon than being surprised with fine Italian wine with a personalized note from home written in Italian that said, “Wishing you all the best in the world, love your mom and dad,” said Bernie.
