  • Entry 261 - Forget Bridezilla. Think Momzilla.

Mother of the Bride, Jamaica Disaster
We spent months planning my daughter's destination wedding in Jamaica - my first trip there. Excited, we headed out only to find every single flight delayed! We were the last ones to Jamaica and just breathing a sigh of relief, then found we were given the wrong room. It was awful, smelly and miles from everyone else. We waited forever in our hot clothes and finally got our beachfront room. Opened the curtains to our beautiful balcony only to find naked people everywhere! It's the NUDE side and we are stuck with it. Next day upon heading to the beach, I slipped on the wet step and twisted my stupid ankle. I limped to the beach and grabbed a lounge chair. Unfortunately I forgot facial sunscreen. I felt my face burning and I grabbed some sunscreen quick, but then got an allergic reaction to sunscreen. My face started swelling, my eyes swelled shut and my lips swelled, blistered and SPLIT! Yuck! After a sleepless night with cold packs on my face, an infection struck my lips the next day. Desperate, I found a doctor who gave me prescriptions and a shot and banished me from the sun for the rest of the trip. The wedding photos are AWFUL! Frankenstein Mother of the Bride at the wedding, NO sun, NO fun, NO money left and weeks to recover. A completely ruined vacation.

Entry 353 - Recent Marriage Doesn't Begin with Happily Ever After

     Things Can Happen
We spent our honeymoon in Jamaica. It was wonderful for the first few days. We went on an infamous waterfall trek and we both got ear infections; mine was so bad my flight home was threatened. Then my husband thought he'd try water skiing...how hard could it be? About 10 feet off shore one ski went forward, the other did not. He ended up pulling and ripping every tendon and muscle as close to breaking his leg as possible. We all know it's better to break it than suffer that. As soon as we landed at the airport, we went straight to our doctor's office where I also found out I had an intestinal bug...yippee! To this day my ear is still sensitive as the doc down south had misdiagnosed it. Ah, good memories!

Entry 411 - Honeymoon with Harley and Ivan

     Ivan the Terrible
My husband surprised me with a trip to Aruba for our honeymoon in 2004. The first few days were beautiful, but it all went downhill after two beautiful days. We took a trip to the natural pool, where my husband lost the wedding ring he had been wearing for a total of about 9 days! The next day we rented a Harley that decided to break down in the middle of the desert. The following day we found out that Hurricane Ivan was headed our way -- the first hurricane in 10-15 years! They began boarding up our rooms, so we decided to move to a safer room behind the resort and away from the water. On our way to the new room a bird relieved itself on my shoulder. The night that we were stuck in our room due to torrential downpours and severe lightning caused by Ivan, my husband got some sort of rash that covered his entire body. Needless to say our honeymoon was not a week of bliss, but full of mishaps and a hurricane! The only good thing that came out of the whole story is our dog, Ivan!

    Entry 186 - Rash Decisions

     Honeymoon Romance Rash
On our honeymoon to the Caribbean, my wife and I went for a romantic horseback ride. We rode beautiful sandy beaches, up the mountain side, and through local neighborhoods. We also learned my wife is highly allergic to horses and broke out in hives all over her neck and shoulders! By the time we got back to the stable, she was ready to scratch her skin off. So much for two lovebirds having a relaxing time! We spent the afternoon waiting for allergy medication to kick in.

Entry 395 - Wedding Dress and Good Weather...another story

     Love Conquers All
After being separated for years and finding our way back to each other, we decided to get married on October 4, 2000. We booked our cruise and boarded the plane. Upon arrival, the airline lost my wedding dress and, when we got on the cruise, the agent decided to suprise us and book us a suite but because his family came with we got stuck in the inside cabin. It being October, there were two hurricanes and we were unable to get off in the Caymen Islands where our wedding was to take place. So, two hurricanes, no dress, no wedding and his family was in our dream suite. We did some fast planning and got a wedding set up in Cozumel. I had two hours to find a dress and get ready for my wedding. I got off the boat and asked the taxi driver to take me to a dress shop. He dropped us off at the market only to find out it was the supermarket with dead chickens hanging but no dresses. I made my way to the shops, got a dress and ran to my wedding. My unluckiest trip is still my best.

Entry 463 - Down Under Disaster

     Unforgettable
Our flight to Sydney, Australia was 6+ hours late due to sand storms. We backtracked to Brisbane where after 2 hours got off the plane, were bused to Sydney and ended up going back through security on the plane and landing in Sydney. Upon arrival we both had tightness and leg swelling. Mine subsided quickly, and we looked for any small sign of blood clots on my husband as this continued; there were none. The evening before we were to fly out my husband had severe shortness of breath and chest pain but no leg pain. We ended up with him staying in the ER for a week because of blood clots in the lungs. We had to rebook the trip home. I was able move all our stuff to be closer to the hospital. When he got out, we were still there a couple days before he was cleared to fly and get special arrangements made on flights. It took months to get all the bills worked out. Scary to be alone in a foreign country, no family to help, but everyone was super nice. Thank goodness for travel insurance, no idea what we would have done to cover all the extra expenses.

Entry 7 - Horrifically Short Honeymoon

     Horrifying Honeymoon
My husband and I were off to our dream honeymoon in Peter Island, British Virgin Islands. Upon arrival to the secluded island, we decided to eat some of their world-class cuisine. I ate two things I have never eaten before: duck and scallops. That evening I proceeded to vomit about twenty times before my husband called for help. The front desk called search and rescue to come out and get us to a nearby island (Tortola). They put an oxygen mask on me and wrapped me up in the bed sheets, then put me in an inflatable raft with 8 other people in pitch-black darkness. Our only source of light in the ocean abyss came from a small flashlight held by the man in the front. Two hospital visits, three shots, six IVs, a handful of meds, plenty of bills, and a couple of ultrasounds later I was sent back HOME to Miami with a bad case of food poisoning and a horrified husband. We were greeted in our hometown with the news that our luggage had been lost upon the way, thus concluding our horrifically short 'honeymoon.'
