Guatemala Travel Planning & Travel Tips:

Embassy Contact Information: We encourage U.S. citizens living in or visiting Guatemala to register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City and obtain updated information on travel and security in Guatemala. You may now register with the American Citizen Services (ACS) Section using the registration form on the "Consular Notices Index" on the Embassy's homepage. You may wish to send a scanned copy of your U.S. passport e-mail to ACS at amcitsguatemala@state.gov and/or e-mail it to your own address or to someone in the United States. This will enable you to easily retrieve a copy of your passport to facilitate a replacement. The latest security information is available from the Embassy, including its website (see below). The Consular Section is open for citizen services, including registration, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursdays and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Fridays, excluding U.S. and Guatemalan holidays. The second and last Friday of each month are reserved for administrative matters; therefore, routine citizen services are not provided. Emergency services are available at all times. The U.S. Embassy is located at Avenida La Reforma 7-01, Zone 10; telephone (502) 331-1541 during Embassy business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), or (502) 331-8904 for emergencies during non-business hours; fax (502) 331-0564; website.

Climate: The best time to visit is November-April, when there's less rain. It's always cooler in the mountains (usually in the 60s F/15-22 C) and hot and humid in the lowlands (especially on the Pacific coast). Tikal can be very hot in the summer (in the 90s F/33-37 C and humid), but take a sweater and long-sleeved shirt for the evenings and a jacket for Guatemala City. In September, when tropical storms move in from the Caribbean, it can rain for days on end.

Calling Internationally: To call United States: 011+502+City Info.

Electricity: The electricity in Guatemala is 110 volts AC, as it is in the continental United States and Canada.
