Belize Travel Planning & Travel Tips:
Embassy Contact Information: U.S. citizens living in or visiting Belize are encouraged to register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Belize City and obtain updated information on travel and security in Belize. The U.S. Embassy is located at the intersection of Gabourel Lane and Hutson Street in Belize City; telephone 011 (501) 227-7161/62/63. The Embassy is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for the 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. lunch hour.
Climate: The best time to visit is November-March, when days are in the 80s F/27-32 C, with nights a few degrees cooler. April or May would be our second choice, as it's drier and water visibility is excellent. June-October are the rainy months, when hurricanes are possible. Although the weather is less predictable then, attractions are less crowded and hotels generally offer lower off-season rates. Snorkelers and divers claim the weather is better at that time because there's less wind-unless a storm is closing in. Humidity is almost always 70% or more, and it rains at least 50 in/125 cm a year.
Calling Internationally: You can direct dial from your hotel room to the US. Most hotels charge about US$2.00 to $3.00 per minute plus a connection fee. It is less expensive to call from the Internet Cafe (located on Front Street between Ambergris and Pelican). There you will pay about US$1.50 to $2.00 per minute with no connection fee. Internet service to check your email runs about $9.00 per hour (minimum of 15 minutes for $3.00). They are generally open from 8:30 am - 9:00 pm. You cell phone will most likely not work in Belize. If you are using a calling card, call your phone company to find out what number to dial from Belize to connect you to their service. The International Calling Code for the US would be 001+(Area Code)+Number.
Electricity: International AC outlet adapters do not convert electric current. If your appliance does not accept 220-240 volt current, serious damage can result if you do not also use a step down transformer to convert the current to 110-120 volts. Step down transformers convert 220/240 volt electricity to 110/120 volts for American appliances.
Do not attempt to use a 110-120 volt North American surge protector on a 220-240 volt power system, even with a step down transformer. This will damage the 110-120 volt surge protector and may damage your appliance.
