South America has much to offer international travelers, from lush, dense forests to delicious local cuisine. Yet despite its considerable beauty and affordable accommodations, South America seems largely unexplored by travelers from the U.S. For adventurous explorers who would like to get their feet wet with South American exploration, while staying in a safe and beautiful city, could find exactly what they are looking for in the humble city of Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Located in an Andean valley in central Bolivia, Cochabamba is the fourth largest city in the country and has gained a reputation as Bolivia's resort city due to its beautiful scenery and moderate climate. It is also located 8,445 feet above sea level, ranking it among the highest cities in all of South America.
The city is home the largest statue of Jesus in the world, the Cristo de la Concordia. Much like it's spiritual brother Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - the Bolivian statue is just the slightest bit taller - Cristo De la Concordia is situated on a hill and offers an excellent view of the city below.
Cochabamba has also become known in recent years as the paragliding capital of Bolivia, with several agencies offering tandem and individual flights as well as instructional courses for first timers.
