• Travelers can now fly with their pets - for a fee

    2010-05-13

For pet owners, one of the hardest things to do is travel. Owners must find a responsible friend or neighbor to watch their four-legged friend, shell out an arm and a leg for expensive pet hotels or subject the poor animal to a crate ride in the belly of the plane. Yet dog-lovers hoping to visit friends and family across the country may be in luck as one airline has announced that it will begin allowing small pets on board its passenger flights.

Frontier airlines has announced that small dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and small birds will now be allowed to be carried on the plane, though the newfound freedom comes at a price, as the privilege comes with a $75 price tag - a rate higher than some of those charged to the airline's human clientele.

The move echoes that of discount airline Southwest, which began allowing pets to ride in the cabin with their owner for a nominal fee just last year.

Spokespeople for Frontier say that the decision was approved to enhance the customer experience.

"We have spent a lot of time listening to our customers and determining what would make their travel experience even better," said Ian Arthur, the company's vice president of marketing and branding. "We received a lot of feedback on our pet policy and determined that pets would be a welcome addition to the Frontier travel experience."
