• Swiss couple sets out to teach world the benefits of eco-tourism

    2010-06-09

Traveling can be a wonderful experience, although the effects of jets and cars on the environment is an unfortunate side effect. One Swiss couple is looking to change people's perceptions of what is possible with green travel by taking their family on a world vacation without leaving a huge carbon footprint.

Dario Schworer, a 42-year-old mountain guide, and his wife Sabine are packing up their three children for a world vacation - and they're doing it without any form of motorized transportation, according to CNN. The couple plans to visit every climate zone and climb the highest mountain on every continent.

The trip began way back in 2003, and the couple have had three children since then - 5-year-old Sabine, 3-year-old Andri, and 9-month-old Noe. The children were all born in various countries on the trip, which has taken them through 47 countries.

The couple are in no rush to complete their trip. Along the way, they stop for lengthy periods in places they like and spread ecological habits to locals. They inspired one man in Chile to build his house on the water using a plastic bottle foundation. The family moves by cycling and sailing, and wait for good weather before heading out on the road.

Most families won't have the endurance and dedication to pull off the Schworers' idea of a vacation, but those who want to help the environment should look into eco-tourism packages.
