South America's food and wine captivate visitors
2009-11-06
For many travelers, the local cuisine of a potential destination is every bit as
important as the scenery - and for true gourmands, maybe more so. With that in
mind, food tourists may be tempted to head south this winter, as South American
food and Wine has been lauded for generations.
Popular travel blog, the
Perrin Post recommends Argentina and Chile as perfect winter getaways for
Northern adventurers. Mild temperature and low prices ensure that cities like
Buenos Aires and Mendoza offer a wide mix of affordable shopping and dining all
while remaining a short drive from Chilean wine country.
The region is
well known for its meats and fish, gaining Argentinean steakhouses quite the
reputation among connoisseurs - and, in recent years, Mendoza has been gaining
considerable international renown for its many wine tours.
The Colchagua
valley on the outskirts of Santiago has also gained acclaim for its own unique
wines - including Wine Spectator's 2008 wine of the year, Clos Apalta – and the
Chilean fish has become a staple in high-end restaurants the world over.
