• Software developer hopes to make iPad king of in-flight entertainment

    2010-05-14

Technophiles and gadget hounds alike have been salivating over the potential of the iPad for months, and one software developer is hoping to help the device reach that potential by providing unique online content for mid-flight browsing and entertainment.

Bluebox Avionica, a developer focused on the air travel market, is developing software specifically for the iPad that will allow passengers to watch first-run movies, play games, read e-books and magazines or even gamble with an in-flight casino option. The service is seen as a welcome alternative to more traditional airline entertainment chosen by the flight provider and squeezed onto a tiny overhead or headrest-embedded screen.

Software for the iPad would also be unique to each flight provider and offer safety precautions that would allow users to browse with the device throughout the flight, rather than just the times when small electronics are permitted in the cabin.

The company is shopping the idea around to a number of airlines, as the program would require the airline to invest in a number of iPads and distribute them for use by their passengers at the beginning of the flight. Bluebox has apparently inked a deal with an international carrier, though refused to name their partner at this time.
