  • Sink beneath the shore in Cozumel, Mexico

    2010-04-22

With the summer sun approaching fast, tourists across the country are gearing up for warm weather excursions to beaches and retreats throughout the world, and while there are no shortage of destinations boasting surf and sand, there are few locations that can match the immense beauty and laid-back atmosphere of Cozumel, Mexico.

Cozumel is a small Caribbean island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Southern Mexico. Over the years it has become a popular travel spot due to its frequently sunny weather, idyllic, white sandy beaches and excellent scuba diving opportunities.

The tiny island has one city, San Miguel, which offers up a number of restaurants, shops and night clubs meant to keep travelers partying through the night, though most venture to the island of Cozumel to explore the coastline.

There are many beautiful beaches on the island, but the best lie on the largely undeveloped east side. These pristine, untouched beaches offer big waves for surfers, rocky outcrops over the ocean perfect for photogs and a number of restaurants randomly interspersed near the coastline.

Travelers seeking a more thorough underwater exploration of the island can also embark on a personal Mini Submarine tour, a guided adventure using state-of-the-art scooters to maneuver the through the sea.
