Each year, millions of international tourists head to Europe in search of a fun and exciting destination, yet despite the wealth of travel options provided by the old continent, most vacationers will head to one of the more established and popular destinations like Paris, Rome or London. Those travelers seeking a unique getaway rich in local history and full of things to do, might just forsake the hot spots and head to the Slovakian capital of Bratislava.
Bratislava, also known as Pozsony and Pressburg in Hungarian and German respectively, is the largest city in the Slovak Republic. As the capital, it serves as the administrative, cultural and economic center of the country and has maintained a lot of the unique characteristics from its shared past with both the Kingdom of Hungary and the country of Germany.
Travelers will find much to see and do in the city - particularly fans of classic architecture. St. Martin's Cathedral is the largest and among the oldest churches in the city, and is a prime example of traditional Gothic architecture from its towering spire down to the gilded royal crown adorning its peak.
Bratislava also has a comprehensive and fun zoo that makes for an enchanting walk through the city. It features a number of common zoo animals like monkeys and rhinos, and recently acquired two rare white tigers.
