• Moving iceberg provides "once-in-a-lifetime" attraction in Australia

    2009-12-09

Australia has no shortage of tourist-friendly sights. There's the iconic Opera House that illuminates Sydney Harbor, the majestic and sacred Ayers Rock which punctuates Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park and the Great Barrier Reef that brightens the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland. Yet a new sight promises to provide perhaps the most unique visual in Australia's storied history - an iceberg drifting across the Aussie coast. Referred to as B17B by global scientists, the nearly 12-mile-long iceberg is currently drifting towards the Western Aussie coast. Though ice flows in the region are not entirely uncommon, B17B is unique in both its size and the length of its journey from Antarctica. "Icebergs do come from time to time and they can be very big, but it can be a long time before we spot one - so it's really a once-in-a-lifetime sighting," says Neal Young, an Australian Glaciologist, in a statement to the Australian Associated press. Though B17B is not yet viewable from the Aussie Coast, projected paths show a landfall in South West Australia is possible.
