Great places to stay in Venice
2010-07-09
Venice, widely considered to be one of the world's most romantic cities, is as close to a sure thing as vacations get. Travelers will likely be happy simply being in the city, but there are a number of hotels that can turn a good experience into a great one.
Conde Nast Traveler compiles an annual list of the best hotels less than a year old, and two recently-opened properties in Venice made the list.
The Palazzina Grassi, a small and intimate hotel with its own private dock on the Grand Canal, was one of the city's winners. The news source cited its discreet charm mixed with modern opulence in awarding the hotel top marks. Although located on the Grand Canal, it's far away enough from the tourist spots to be a well-kept secret, but close enough to be convenient.
Those who want to be in the center of it can't do much better than the Centurion Palace, which sits at the mouth of the Grand Canal and faces St. Mark's plaza. Many of the unique, hand-designed rooms in this hotel offer stunning views of the city, overlooking the water, but those in the courtyard area are unlikely to be disappointed. That's because the location is just a short walk away from popular sites like the Santa Maria della Salute church.
