• Explore the cultures of the past in Beijing, China

    2010-04-21

As the political tensions between China and the U.S. slowly fade, more and more travelers are beginning to explore the many sights and sounds of the enormous country. With travel to and from China predicted to comprise a significant portion of airfares in the coming years, American tourists may be wondering where to visit while in the Middle Kingdom. While there is much to see and do in China, tourists may find the most interesting items in the Dongcheng district of Beijing.

In a city as large as Beijing, it is surprising that so many historical sites would find their way into one section, yet the Dongcheng district contains some of the most popular sites in the country.

One of the key attractions to this district is the spacious plaza of Tiananmen Square. Sitting at the foot of the Tiananmen monument, roughly translated as the Gate of Heavenly Peace, Tiananmen Square is the largest open air plaza of its kind in the world. It is surrounded by Soviet-style monuments and government buildings.

A short distance away lies Gu Gong, the Forbidden City, a relic of imperial Chinese grandeur. This castle and courtyard dates back to the Ming Dynasty and houses the Palace Museum within.
