    2010-05-05

Though it may not be as big of a tourist destination as other continents like Europe or Asia, South America has much to offer international travelers who are interested in fine food, compelling historical ruins and beautiful natural scenery. When searching for a South American destination that combines all of these attributes, travelers need look no further than Quito, Ecuador.

Properly named San Francisco de Quito, the city is the capital of Ecuador and lies in the Guayallbamba river basin on the eastern side of the Pichinicha volcano in the Andes mountains. Additionally, Quito is the highest legal capital in the world and was the first major city to be crowned an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.

The city boasts something for travelers of all varieties. Cultural vacationers will relish the opportunity to peruse the local art scene at la casa del cultura, while photo-happy scenery tourists will enjoy a trip along el Telerifico - the world's second-highest cable car which provides a panoramic view of the city.

More athletic travelers may also want to participate in the Ciclopaseo, a 20-mile course that sees crowds of up to 30,000 people biking, blading or running the course every Sunday.
