• Experience a mesh of cultures in Blumenau Brazil

    2010-04-13

For most travelers a trip to Brazil conjures up images of native peoples, samba dancing and the exuberant displays of passion commonly seen in Rio's Carnival celebrations. Yet as one might expect from the largest country in South America, Brazil is actually a confluence of many cultures and boasts one of the more cosmopolitan populations of the region.

Few cities exemplify this truth better than the German-influenced Blumenau. Located in the Itajaí valley in the Santa Catarina state of southern Brazil, Blumenau was founded by a group of German immigrants in 1850 and retains much of the culture and influence of their descent.

Much of the city's architecture is comprised of more traditional European styles originating in Italy and Bavaria, most notably the Castelinho da Havan - a traditional chalet-style structure that currently houses a department store, a pub and a restaurant.

Travelers can also explore the history of the majestic city at the Museu da Familia Colonial, a museum located within the first and oldest house in the area. Tourists can explore the building, which dates back to 1858, and learn about the city's founder Otto Hermann Blumenau.
