Ecotourism is growing in popularity among vacationers who love to travel and be environmentally conscious while doing so. Those who want to reduce their personal carbon footprint while they fly now have a new option with the opening of America's first "green" airport.
The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport in Panama City took an environmentally-sensitive approach to design, according to the Government Monitor. During construction of the airport, it sought and was awarded certification from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building organization. Many believe the green initiative will be officially recognized as America's first "green" airport soon.
It is also the first airport to be built in the country since the September 11th attacks.
The opening of the building was good news for a state that is attempting to repair its environmental image in the wake of the BP oil spill.
"I am confident this airport will further encourage tourists to visit the panhandle, our sugar-sand beaches, and fish in our pristine waters," said Florida governor Charlie Crist.
The airport is already handling local flights and is expected to add international flights in the near future.
