• Using smart phones for free-spirited travel

    2012-06-27

It can be wise to map out an itinerary before embarking on a trip to the new locale, but some travelers like to throw caution to the wind and simply see where their feet will take them.

However, adventure travel seekers who are spontaneous may still want to know where the best places are to visit at their destination, even when exploring without a plan. To help, there are some useful smart phone applications on the market that can assist the intrepid traveler in discovering new things and getting the most out of their getaway.

Those who already use the application Foursquare to check into their favorite restaurants and bars can also find new places to encounter through the program. There is a feature that allows users to see a map of their location and what places they can visit nearby, whether it be museums and coffee shops or attractions and landmarks.

The Triposo app is a similar idea, but allows for more global reach in their mapping. Users can map out a real-time plan in locations like Pula, Croatia, and Porto, Portugal, upon their arrival.

Try travel apps on smart phones to score quick deals

Some travelers may define their spontaneity by choosing to take their getaways at the last minute. Fortunately, there are applications for these types of tourists as well that will help them locate the best deals for their quick travel decisions.

Many last-minute booking websites also have complementary apps that will  help travelers find accommodations, flights and even activities for a fraction of the original price when they choose to make reservations a day or two in advance, reports Smart Money. Advancements in technology allow travelers to pay for and even scan tickets on their phone, eliminating the need to use a regular computer at all when completing transactions.

It is advisable, however, to check the star level or reviews of a hotel when choosing to reserve a room on the fly. While the monetary aspect can be irresistible, it may not be worth compromising on basic necessities like convenient locations and cleanliness. Making sure one books rooms at three-, four- or five-star establishments, or avoid trying a reservation that has gotten many negative reviews, can ensure patrons will get the most out of their travel budget while not sacrificing style.
