No matter where you go, you're sure to run into some impressive landmarks. Every country has an iconic building, monument, natural formation or anything in between that is worth a visit. And while each such destination has its appeal, there are certain spots in particular that stand above the rest. TripAdvisor recently revealed what its readers picked as the world's top landmarks, and the list is certainly impressive. Here's a look at some of the highlights:

    St. Peter's Basilica
Located in Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica is among the most well-known churches in a continent that is replete with iconic buildings. Coming in at No. 8 on the list, the structure was completed in 1626 and stands as one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in the world. In addition to its stunning design and impressive size - it's the world's largest church in terms of volume - St. Peter's Basilica is also a popular destination because it houses many famous works of art, including Michaela's Pietà.

    Taj Mahal
An estimated 3 million visitors head to the Taj Mahal every year, so it's no wonder it landed at No. 3 on TripAdvisor's list. The stunning marble mausoleum has been an iconic piece of India for more than 350 years, but it's the more-than-breathtaking main building that draws so many tourists. The hanging gardens that welcome you upon your arrival are an impressive landmark on their own and are just one of the many highlights of the Taj Mahal.

    Machu Picchu
Ancient sites are some of the most compelling landmarks in the world, and Machu Picchu is often regarded as one of the best. TripAdvisor readers seem to agree, ranking the Peruvian site as the No. 1 world landmark. It's easy to see why it was at the top spot given it's intriguing history. The site was built by the Incas in 1450 and was originally used as an estate for Incan rulers, but it was eventually abandoned in the 1500s. In addition to its historical significance, Machu Picchu is such a popular destination because of its location. Built into the Andes, the site features some of the best views in the world, and the hike to Machu Picchu is perfect for adventure seekers.
