• The US is replete with adventure travel opportunities

The Green River Gorge in rural North Carolina is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the U.S., and now adventure travel enthusiasts can experience it for themselves. The area has recently been outfitted with zip lines, sky bridges and rappels, some of which take visitors more than 1,100 feet into the gorge's depths, according to The Associated Press. Although this is one of the newest adventure travel opportunities in the U.S., it is not the only one, and there are a few pulse-pounding destinations in particular that can get your adrenaline pumping.

    Outer Banks
The Green River Gorge isn't the only adventure hotspot in the Tar Heel State - the famous Outer Banks are an exceptional location as well. The picturesque stretch of coastline isn't just ideal for those looking to relax at the beach, and there is plenty for travelers hoping to stay active during their time on vacation. Windsurfing, ATV riding and hiking are all popular activities in OBX, especially at Jockey's Ridge State Park, which is home to the tallest sand dune structure in the country.

    San Juan Islands
Located along the west coast of Washington, the four San Juan Islands are accessible by ferry, but many choose to explore the archipelago via kayak, notes NBC News. The islands are widely recognized as some of the best natural scenery in the U.S., with crystal clear waters and diverse wildlife standing out as highlights. Perhaps most appealing is that the serene waters mean everyone from expert kayakers to novice rowers can experience the stunning seascape for themselves.

    Zion Narrows
The Mountain West is home to many of the best adventure travel opportunities in the U.S., and Utah's Zion Narrows are hard to beat. Situated in Zion National Park, this 16-mile stretch of hiking trail is one of the most unusual treks in the region. For starters, about half of the hike is in the river - ranging from ankle- to knee-deep - and you have the opportunity to cut right through the heart of the canyon. There are few other places in the country where you can look up at towering canyon walls, which are as high as 2,000 feet in some places, so the narrows will certainly leave a long-lasting impression.
