• Take a trip to India's wilder side in Rajasthan

    2011-08-22

India's vast landscape has plenty of diversity and destinations to explore. An area of special consideration for adventurous travelers may be the region of Rajasthan, where much of the national culture, tradition and mystery has been preserved by the local people.

Travelers may start in the city of Jodphur, where guests can marvel at the Umaid Bhawan Palace. According to Frommer's, this massive structure was built in the 1900s and boasts almost 350 individual rooms. It resides on an outcrop that provides breathtaking vistas of the landscape below.

For a look into India's natural beauty, travelers should visit Ranthambhore National Park. In the past, hunters used to come here in search of wild game, but nowadays it's strictly a reserve that is home to a majestic tiger population that can be glimpsed in their natural habitat.

Locals in the Rajasthan region have a deep appreciation for music and tend to showcase this interest for guests, Travel and Leisure reports. A genre that has remained present for a thousand years is gypsy music, brought in by the Roma people of Eastern Europe. In towns like Jaisalmer and Kanoi, travelers may catch outdoor performances in the streets.
