Stockholm, Sweden has something for everyone
2010-08-26
The Swedish countryside is beautiful, but the true heart of the country is in its largest and capital city, Stockholm.
Unlike many cities, Stockholm is actually a collection of small islands on the Baltic Sea connected by a network of bridges and roads. As such, the water in the city makes for a perfect backdrop for travelers planning Stockholm adventures. Some tourists may want to book a boat tour early on in order to get a sense of the city and identify some hotspots they'd like to hit.
One of those spots will surely be the Old Town, or "Gamla Stan" section of the city. This architecture in this area of the town has been preserved to give the district a sense of old world charm. In addition to the picturesque quality of Gamla Stan, travelers will also find the Royal Palace and Swedish parliament.
Vacationers should head to the northern island for shopping, nightlife and restaurants. The district of Norrmalm is known as a major commercial area, while travelers interested in culture should head to Ostermalm, home to several museums and other points of interest.
The suburbs of Stockholm are just as interesting as the city itself. Travelers should be sure not to miss the beautiful and haunting Woodland Cemetary in Soderot or the Viking village of Birka in Ekero.
