Step out of the cold and into a beach vacation in Zanzibar
2010-02-12
With much of the country engulfed in a mammoth snowstorm that meteorologists and newscasters around the country have dubbed "Snowmaggedon", many travelers are desperately seeking a break from the cold. For a unique getaway rich with fun in the sun, an excursion to Zanzibar could provide the perfect escape.
Located off the coast of the African nation of Tanzania, Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands, home to pristine beaches that have yet to fall victim to overdevelopment. Of particular note are the islands of Unguja, Mafia and Pemba where sparse population, silky white sand and clear azure water collide to form an ideal beach destination.
Travelers can lounge under free growing coconut trees, go scuba diving on the island chains' unspoiled reefs or chase the local sea life on the Kimikazi Dolphin tour.
The country is also home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town - a traditional city reflecting the unique architectural styles of the cultures that have found their way to the archipelago including Moorish, Middle Eastern, Indian and African.
