• See a rare white kiwi when visiting New Zealand

    2012-04-05

Like its neighbor Australia, the island country of New Zealand is known to be home to some of the most unique creatures in the world. One of the most popular species in the region is the beloved kiwi, a tiny, flightless bird. While these long-beaked animals are typically brown, every now and then, a rare white kiwi is born.

Parents who are taking the kids to New Zealand and want to create a memorable family travel experience should consider bringing them to the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, where a white kiwi resides along with a variety of other fascinating creatures.

The Wildlife Centre, which is located on New Zealand’s North Island, is dedicated to both wildlife conservation and restoration. At the facility, visitors will find several different local birds, including the kokako, the takahe, and, of course, the kiwi.

In May 2011, the little white kiwi named Manukura was born at the centre, where she resides to this day. While some may think the pure white bird is albino, this is not the case. She actually carries a recessive white feather gene, which travelers can learn more about on a visit this New Zealand attraction.
