See a different side of Norway in Tromsø
2010-03-17
Possessing lush green forests, swooping hills and a deep relationship with the
sea, Norway can prove to be an ideal vacation spot for travelers interested in a
relaxing place with a cool breeze and beautiful scenery. When visiting the
Scandinavian country, visitors might want to take a trek to the largest city in
the country's northern region, Tromsø.
Tromsø is a city in Troms County
that has gained a reputation in Europe as a hub for art, history,
sophistication, fine food and an active nightlife amidst the omnipresent beauty
of the Norwegian countryside.
As a northern city, Tromsø is home to two
unique light-based phenomena - the aurora borealis and midnight sun. From May 18
to July 26, the sun is always above the horizon in the region - a potentially
disorienting factor for many tourists. When it is dark, the city becomes a prime
viewing spot for the aurora borealis, particularly between early October and mid
March.
The city also boasts the impressive Ishavskatedralen, or arctic
cathedral, a stunning triangular church which features one of the largest
stained-glass windows in Northern Europe that illuminates beautifully in the
sun.
