Prepare early when studying abroad

Summer is fast approaching and that means that many students are beginning their
preparations to study abroad this fall. While it is an exciting time to be sure,
there are several considerations that any student must make before moving to a
new country.
One essential factor that international travelers must
check is the status of the electrical outlets in their soon-to-be new country of
residence. While many countries share a similar plug to the U.S., there are
hundreds of others, like France or China, who utilize a different outlet for
their electronics. Be extra careful, however, as even countries utilizing the
same style of outlets may not be set up for three-prong plugs.
If
traveling with a cell phone it's important to research the functionality of the
device in its new surroundings. Several models of mobile phones are capable of
working overseas, yet one must be mindful of the charges that can arise from
international use. Check roaming and data settings on the phone to be sure the
next bill isn't astronomical.
A more personal consideration when
traveling abroad is whether or not to bring a gift. Many students entering a new
country stay with a host family, and an introductory gift leaves a great
impression. A general rule of thumb is to stick with sweets or cookies that can
be shared, rather than more lavish presents.
