• Participate in week-long desert festival in Nevada this summer

    2012-04-19

Organizing for an event happening this August in the springtime may seem too far in advance, but for Burning Man, some enthusiasts began making their plans the day last year's festival ended. Travelers searching for the ultimate getaway experience can check out Burning Man, which has evolved over the years into an unusual and memorable gathering.

The event takes place over the course of eight days from August to September in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Nearly 50,000 people journey to the site and create a temporary village, known as Black Rock City, that is full of things to do, classes to take and music to enjoy. It has evolved from a small gathering on the beaches of San Francisco in the 1980s to a year-long undertaking that encourages community, artistic expression and having fun.

Each participant is known to have their own unique experience depending on what they'd like to get out of their time at Burning Man. Some choose to create large artworks that are on display for all to see, while others contribute by entertaining crowds with classic street performances. Many of the festival goers agree that all much contribute to the event in some way, since there are no corporate sponsors, no headlining musical acts and no official food vendors.

The highlight of the week is the very end. Artists create a massive effigy that is different every year, but always has a man-shaped wooden figure on the top. The structure, which can reach dozens of feet high, is the centerpoint of the temporary city during the festival. On the last night, the wood is burned in a ceremony that usually lasts until sunrise with dancing, singing and more during the all-night party.

Anyone who is interested must purchase tickets far in advance through the official Burning Man website. This year the tickets are quickly selling out, but many can be bought through private sellers and second-chance sales. Travelers who want to be a part of this one-of-a-kind celebration can also find out additional information about what to bring and how they can help through Facebook and Twitter. This can be the ideal way to spend an adventure travel experience in Nevada this summer by experiencing this fascinating festival.
