Gotland, Sweden: A quick getaway off the shores of Stockholm
2010-08-30
Those who visit Sweden will inexorably be drawn to the main capital of Stockholm, but travelers shouldn't overlook Gotland, a small island just off the city's coast.
According to the New York Times, Gotland has become a popular vacation destination for Stockholm elite looking to get away for a weekend. It's a short boat ride from the city, and the isle has seen a proliferation of big-city style nightclubs that have turned it into a destination for clubbers and partygoers.
This atmosphere has transformed the once-unassuming island into a central spot for some of Sweden's most happening parties. Yet even travelers who left their dancing shoes at home will appreciate the hotels, eateries and bars that have popped up because of the increased tourism business.
That's not the only way to experience Gotland, however. The glitz and glamour of this area quickly fades away as travelers drive to one of the more remote parts of the island. It's perfectly easy to shack up at a small inn, take in the amazing scenery, and not encounter another soul.
