• European cities honored in top 10 food and wine list

    2011-12-07

Italy dominated TripAdvisor's Traveler's Choice 2011 Top 10 Food and Wine Destinations list for Europe, with five of the featured cities located in the Mediterranean country. Florence, Italy, took the number one spot for its local grown olives, fava beans and wild game. The Tuscan area's wines also contributed heavily to the number one spot.

Rome fell into the number three spot for its traditional pasta dishes, followed by Sorrento at number four. The papal city is famous for more than just religion, with amazing cheese-based dishes and heavy use of artichokes. Fresh caught seafood and simple tomato sauces in Sorrento make the peninsular city enticing, as does the famous local limoncello. Try the pizza here as well, as the area around Naples is the historical home of pizza fritta.

Siena and Bologna catch the sixth and seventh spots, respectively. These northern cities feature the richer, heartier foods common with Northern Italy and the Tuscan area. Order some bread and bean soup or cured sausage and wash it down with a glass of the house chianti for a local treat.
