• Enjoy the wonders of the Grand Canyon for a classic American vacation

    2012-03-06

When women are planning to hit the open road on an exciting adventure travel excursion, they may want to gather up the girls and head to the Grand Canyon in Arizona for a thrilling experience in this sunny state. The natural wonder has been honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its massive expanse and incredible presence that dates back more than two billion years. Thousands of visitors make trips to see the chasm every year, which has inspired park rangers and other organizations to offer fun attractions, guided tours and more to those who journey there.

Adventurous women may wish to head straight for the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon for a wild rafting trip. According to Lonely Planet, the tours offered range from lazy river trips to conquering class five rapids. Some of the tours challenge guests to take a leap from craggy outcrops in the water below, while others lead guided hikes on the river's surrounding trails in between rafting.

Those interested in local history can visit the South Rim to see the century-old Hopi House, designed by famous architect Mary Colter. This is an interesting example of native American design, made from clay and stone that would house large families who lived near the canyon in the past.

While enjoying the beautiful scenery of Arizona and the national park, travelers who will be in the area this May should not miss the unusual and exciting event officials are hosting at this site. According to The National Park Service website, the Grand Canyon is a prime viewing spot for this year's solar eclipse. Visitors are encouraged to attend the South Rim Star Party that is opened to the public and will be an unforgettable way to experience this natural wonder. There will be experts on hand to assist those wishing to see the solar eclipse with the aid of viewing cards, special glasses or pinhole cameras. After the show, the party continues well into the night that guests can reach by a free shuttle bus service.

There is a wealth of things to see and do in and around the Grand Canyon National Park that will surely delight travelers who venture there on their next vacation.
