  • Denver, NYC top list of most popular Memorial Day destinations

    2013-04-30

Memorial Day is fast approaching, and as one of the most popular travel weekends in the year, families across the country are undoubtedly planning where they want to spend the holiday. There are a number of destinations that are well suited for Memorial Day, but several in particular stand above the rest, and Travelocity recently revealed what vacation hotspots are especially popular among travelers this year.

    Denver
The Colorado capital came in as the fifth most popular destination for Memorial Day, according to the travel website, and it's easy to see why. Aside from the fact that the average airfare has become increasingly affordable, Denver has established itself as one of the most unique cities in the United States. Among its most appealing aspects is lower downtown - affectionately known as LoDo. This area is home to many of the city's best attractions including Elitch Gardens Theme Park, Coors Field and a thriving arts scene.

    Washington, D.C.
What better place to experience Memorial Day than our nation's capital? The third most popular destination among Travelocity users, D.C. is the perfect Memorial Day destination thanks in large part to the rich sense of history that's evident around every corner. After paying tribute to service members at monuments such as the iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial, you should head over to some of the city's famous museums and the Smithsonian's National Zoo.

    New York City
The Big Apple is a large tourist draw all year, and that doesn't change on Memorial Day weekend, according to Travelocity. There's certainly no lack of activity in New York City, and the challenge rests in paring down a loaded itinerary to get the most out of each day. If you're at a loss for what to do after you've visited Memorial Day staples such as the Statue of Liberty, walking down 125th Street can add some variety to your visit. The iconic stretch of road brings you through a cultural hub of the city and will take you past some of the most famous buildings in its history, including the old West End Theater as well as the historic Apollo Theater.
