• Cruise Lines International Association expects positive year

It seems as though the mood of the travel industry has been improving over the last year, and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has quite a positive outlook on the next 12 months for the cruising business. The organization recently released its State of the Industry announcement, revealing a forecast of 16 million passengers in 2011.

This figure is an 6.6 percent increase from 2010 figures, calculated through growing interest in the vacation activity, as well as the introduction of several large ships on Carnival, Celebrity and Disney Cruise Lines.

"The cruise industry has ridden the economic storm of the past 18-plus months with remarkable resiliency, skill and success," Jan Swartz, executive vice president of Princess, said in the press release. "We are confident that, just as 2010 showed impressive gains, 2011 will be another strong year, generating increased benefits for cruise lines, travel agents, the destinations we serve, as well as exciting opportunities for consumers."

Last year saw the introduction of 12 massive ships, including Royal Caribbean's record-breaking Allure of the Seas vessel, which holds 5,400 passengers. CLIA reports that there are more than 20 ships expected to be delivered in 2011 and 2012.
