• Colosseum's dungeon will open for visitors

    2010-10-15

The Colosseum's underground dungeons, which had been undergoing restoration and renovation work, will be open to the public by the end of the month, MSNBC reports.

The underground dungeons are considered by some to be among the most interesting parts of the Colosseum, as this is where the gladiatorial games were organized. It is in the dungeon that lions and other wild animals were stored before being lifted by pulley systems onto the arena. The dungeon is also where gladiators awaited and prepared for battle.

An upper tier of the Colosseum will also be open to visitors soon, having been closed since the 1970s. This upper tier and the dungeon will be open to guided tours of up to 25 people, according to the news source.

Prior to the reopening of these two areas, only about 35 percent of the Colosseum was open to the public. Officials have stated that the dungeon is in very good condition, since it has not been exposed to rain and tourists as much as other areas. According to the news provider, the Colosseum had already been visited by 4.5 million people in the first eight months of this year.
