This summer, self declared geeks, nerds, dorks and fanatics are gathering at some of the best festivals around that specialize in all things weird. Individuals obsessed with old TV shows, comic books and blockbuster movies will attend these events happening this summer.
Star Trek has been one of the most recognizable science fiction television and movie franchises since the 1960s. For the past decade, fans of Star Trek have gathered in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the festivities that take place over a week in August uring the Star Trek Convention. Participants are encouraged to dress up like their favorite characters and some of the original stars will be in attendance as well, including William Shatner, LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis.
Across the pond in London, the annual Film and Comic Con will come to the Big Smoke, with nods to famous franchises like Star Wars, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead and The Goonies, to name a few. This allows guests to indulge their geeky tendencies by attending lectures, lining up for autographs and entering contests for the best costumes. Some of the stars slated to attend this year are Hayden Panettiere of the Heroes TV series and Barbara Coles who starred in the movie Aliens.
Reserve a geeky hotel room
While traveling the world to experience some of these events, individuals can also stay in several geek-themed hotel rooms found worldwide that pay homage to nerdy trends.For instance, tourists who venture to the small town of Forks, Washington, often are looking to follow in the footsteps of characters Bella and Edward from the Twilight series. At the Pacific Inn Motel, guests may book rooms that are Twilight-themed, adorned with black and red bedding, special monogrammed towels and movie posters.
Ice Hotelslc in cold countries like Sweden are not a new concept, but a special room in the Swedish Ice Hotel may be one-of-a-kind. Fan of the Tron movies can stay in a specialized area that has lights frozen in the ice which look similar to the futuristic world depicted in the films.
Spiderman is a classic comic book hero that both kids and adults enjoy. Families venturing to Athens, Greece who love this character can stay in the Spiderman graffiti room, covered in images of the masked idol with complementary colors of red, black and white that honor the story. Other rooms may have various pictures of other comic book characters, such as Batman or the Smurfs.
