• Bratislava: A former communist city reinvented

    2010-11-29

Bratislava, Slovakia, was long known to be a post-communist ghost town, but has in recent years reinvented itself as a modern Central European capital.

According to MSNBC, the city underwent a period of stagnation during communist rule, as historic buildings were allowed to depreciate and go unrestored, and modern bridges and roads were built across the historic district without attention to preserving historical artifacts.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, the city slowly started to reinvigorate its historical center by carefully restoring buildings that were damaged by World War II and never repaired, according to the news source.

Today, Bratislava is not only a restored, historically-rich capital, but a city enlivened with a 70,000-strong student population. The city's heart is the Main Square, which reportedly features kiosks selling souvenirs and knick-knacks in warm months, traditional Central European Christmas markets during the holiday season, coffee houses and painstakingly-restored architecture ranging in period from Gothic to Art Nouveau.

Visitors to the Slovakian city are likely to be impressed by the city's culture, tradition and nightlife.
