  • Best museums to visit during your trip to Rome

Rome is undoubtedly home to some of the most historic cities you're likely to encounter as you make your way through Europe. Yet, while landmarks such as the Colosseum or Roman Forum have plenty to offer, you'll likely want to head to one of the city's many museums at some point during your visit. Much like the historic highlights, there are a variety of museums to choose from, but according to The Huffington Post, there are several that simply can't be missed.

    Palazzo Barberini
It should come as no surprise that Rome is home to some of the most beautiful works of art ever created, and many of them are on display in Palazzo Barberini. Built in 1549, this stunning palace is a work of art in its own right, but once you step inside its walls you're sure to be amazed. The palace houses the National Gallery of Ancient Art, which contains many works from the world's most famous artists, including Raphael's iconic La fornarina - which was painted sometime between 1518 and 1520.

    National Gallery of Modern Art
The pieces may not be quite as old as those housed in Palazzo Barberini, but that doesn't make the works in the National Gallery of Modern Art any less appealing, The Huffington Post notes. With 75 rooms, the museum's size is hard to beat, but the institution is also noteworthy, featuring some of the most famous artists of the last 200 years including Van Gogh, Cezanne and Monet.

    National Museum of Rome
Not all of Rome's best museums are home to stunning works of art. Case in point: the National Museum of Rome. Instead of Renaissance works, this popular destination is dedicated to celebrating the history of the Roman Empire - specifically the time between the 5th century B.C. and 3rd century A.D. Some of the museum's most impressive exhibits deal with the monetary history of Rome.

    Vatican Museums
A trip to Rome is not complete without a visit to the Vatican Museums, where you can get a glimpse into what life has been like in the Vatican for centuries. There are many famous sections to the museums, but The Gallery of Maps stands out as one of the most well-known. The breathtaking artwork that adorns the vaulted ceiling will certainly leave a lasting impression.
