• A German village in the middle of Venezuela

    2010-09-17

South American travel is full of unexpected delights, and the small settlement of La Colonia Tovar is a great example of that.

While traveling through the mostly Spanish-speaking country of Venezuela, some tourists may be surprised upon coming to La Colonia Tovar, located in the country's rolling foothills. This village traces its history back to a group of German settlers who were sent to the continent in order to establish a German foothold in the 19th Century. While much of the continent was later taken over by the Spanish and Portuguese, the German people of La Colonia Tovar remained, leading to this anomaly of a town located off of the beaten path.

Travelers who visit La Colonia Tovar might think they're actually in Germany, as the architecture and lifestyle mimics that of German towns. The culture here is a mix of Venezuelan and German - travelers can expect fresh local fruit in restaurants alongside delicious wurst, strudel and beer. There's even a brewery that makes German-inspired beverages.

La Colonia Tovar may not offer enough for travelers to book a full trip there, but its well worth a diversion and is located quite close to the main city of Caracas.
