Berlin, Germany, is a booming metropolis that brings together all of the best aspects of German culture. History is around every corner, the food is delectable and diverse and the city itself contains plenty of natural and architectural beauty. If you're thinking about European travel in the near future, here are some reasons to consider choosing Berlin as your getaway location.
Travel back in time
Berlin has been a central part of world history for centuries, but some of the most fascinating moments in the city's timeline came during the mid-1900s, with the construction and subsequent fall of the Berlin Wall. As you walk around Berlin, you'll see remnants and memorials to the wall, but the place where you'll get the best idea of what life was like when the city was divided is at the Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie. This building was first constructed in 1962, around the time the wall was built. Today, it's grown in size to occupy several stories. During your visit, you'll be able to learn about what life was like for East and West Berliners, how individuals used to sneak items (and people) across the border and how the city felt on the day the wall came tumbling down.
At some point, you will likely come upon the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. This somber but beautiful memorial is an expansive series of 2,711 rectangular gray stone structures that stretch across a 205,00 square feet of downtown Berlin, near the Brandenburg Gate. The structures vary in height, some only coming up to the ankle, others creating towering hallways that you can get lost in.
This giant city has many green spaces that are perfect for spending a lazy day in the sun. For example, Maur Park, or Wall Park, contains a large section of the Berlin Wall and is a great place to visit on Sunday, because it's home to an enormous open-air market. A trip to Berlin wouldn't be complete without trying some local beers, and you can do this as well - you can even enjoy the brews outside.
A unique shopping experience
Looking for a great place to pick up a few souvenirs? Then visit KaDeWe Berlin, a gargantuan department store that hosts gourmet foods, fine apparel, high-end furniture and much more. At the very top of this structure is a large cafeteria-style restaurant that serves delicious cuisine and offers spectacular views of the Berlin skyline.
